Five days of metals and miners: June 23rd

The regular Saturday slot: The last five days' worth of action in the gold bullion ETF (GLD), the silver bullion ETF (SLV), the miner ETF (GDX), the junior miner ETF (GDXJ) and the copper ETF (COPX).

Notice that volume spike in our baseline GLD midday Wednesday? Certainly marked the week and the action really was split right down the middle, with 2 1/2 days of fairly decent action and then back to the vomiting market. Anyway, COPX did best of the bad bunch and silver took the biggest hit of over 5% on the week.

Breaking: President Lugo impeached, will resign

Happening right now.

Paraguay's Senate voted 39 to 4 for the censure in a move that shocks nobody. The Colorado Party has managed to throw out Lugo and any veneer of democracy in Paraguay. In other words, back to business as usual.

The official decision is to strip Lugo of the Presidency, rather than have him resign as implied in the title of this post. This has already happened so in mere minutes from now Paraguay's Veep Federico Franco will be sworn in as interim President. UNASUR has already declared it will not recognize this impeachment nor the new President or his administration.

UPDATE: There are reportedly disturbances in the streets outsde the Paraguayn Congress where thousands of pro-Lugo protesters had gathered before the vote was announced.

Does this mean cash costs for precious metals producers might just start going down? When the chatter on that subject started a few weeks ago I was sceptical, but on the latest move I'm going to have to join the throng and say yes, there's every reason to expect average costs to drop for production of heavy things you count in ounces or pounds. The effects won't be immediate, but by the end of 2012 we should see costs dropping.

Phew!, quite the list no? Now I may be wrong but I make that 588,000 shares dumped at prices between $22 and $28...let's call it $25, eh Pepe? Now, as most of those sales were made off options exercised at $7.38, I reckon we're ballparking around $11.5m in pre-tax profits on those shares sold to the market....and I'm quite sure PRE.to's President will make good on his tax bill but all the same, that leaves a healthy chunky profit for the dude.

I wonder what he'll spend it all on? Perhaps new sets of bed linen for his workers? Anyway, whatever he splurges it on there's no doubt that for a guy kicked out of Coalcorp for improper dealings just a few short years ago, he's done well for himself.
